Back to basics
Which comes first, concealer or foundation? It’s a question I’m commonly asked and one that many makeup artists do differently.
For most people, I recommend applying foundation first. Often a thin layer of foundation provides enough coverage to minimise minor skin imperfections. If you then want to add a concealer on top, it’s best to use a brush which enables you to use a small amount in exactly the areas you need it.
If you were to apply concealer first and the foundation second, there are a few issues you should be aware of. Makeup artists that do it in this order are very careful to use a stippling (patting) motion over areas that have been concealed. If you apply your foundation in a stroking motion, chances are that your concealer will be moved or wiped off. This means revisiting those areas again and reapplying concealer which is ultimately a waste of both your time and product.
