Eye shadow to match your eye colour?

Eye Shadow and eye colourMatching your eye makeup to your eye (iris) colour, like wearing green eye shadow if you have green eyes, is not the best technique for enhancing your eye colour. It’s the contrasting shades (like purple for green eyes) that really make the natural colour pop.

But this doesn’t mean that you need to avoid wearing the colour (green in this example) altogether. The trick is to apply it subtly and sparingly so you’re not competing with your natural eye colour or trying to match it either.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Colour: choose shadows that are a few shades darker than your eye colour. Light shades can often look frosty;
  2. Texture: I recommend using matte shadows when you’re using strongly pigmented colours like blues and greens. It keeps the look more classic and understated.
  3. Application: Try to concentrate the colour on the centre of your eye, near the pupil when you’re applying it. I prefer to keep the colour as close to the lash line as possible and (almost always) below the eye socket area.
