Does liquid foundation have a use by date?

While there isn’t a use by date on most makeup products, the general rule of thumb for liquid foundations is one year. But even if the year isn’t over, if it has changed colour or scent, or the formula has separated, it needs to be tossed immediately.

Knowing how to look after your liquid foundation when you take it home can extend its useful life. Here are a few things to remember:

1. Keep the foundation out of direct sunlight. It needs to be stored in a cool and dark location (especially in summer) like a cupboard or drawer, and not a window sill or in the car;

2. Wash your hands before each use, or use a clean cotton bud to decant the liquid to minimise bacteria transferring; and

3. Make sure you put the lid back on securely to prevent the liquid from drying out!
