The Red Combo: Red Lips + Red Clothes
Matching your makeup to your clothes is usually a big no-no in the makeup world. But interestingly with red it actually works. This is because wearing red clothes can drain your natural skin tone of warmth. So by adding shades of red back onto your face with makeup, you are effectively injecting some colour back in.
In the montage above, Cate, Zoe and Sandra (all very different skin tones) wear this look equally well. By varying the texture and tone of the lip product they use, the intensity of the makeup changes: subtle understated lips with a sheer wash of colour (Cate Blanchett), the match-y, bold and lustrous lipstick (Zoe Saldana) and the classic, matte lipstick (Sandra Bullock).
If you are thinking of emulating this strong look, here are a few things worth remembering:
- focus on choosing a red lip colour that suits the undertone of your skin rather than searching for a colour that’s identical to your outfit,
- be prepared for the makeup application and maintenance (I’ve written about this here) that red lips warrant,
- keep the rest of your makeup relatively simple, and accessories to a minimum.
